What to expect from the private beta, and how your devices and data work together.
fwd is preparing an invite-only private beta for Chrome and Android. Invitations have not started yet. Join the waitlist to receive an invitation when a place becomes available; we will invite people in batches.
The first release is a Chrome extension for Chrome and Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave and Arc, plus a native app for Android 8.0 or later. Native macOS, Linux and Windows apps, Firefox and Safari are planned future surfaces, with no release dates announced.
Your devices encrypt links, text and files before sending them. Page titles, file names, file types, thumbnails and device names are also encrypted. The service relays and stores encrypted data, but still needs account and operational information such as your email address. Read the privacy policy for what we store.
During the private beta, each file can be up to 10 MB, with 500 MB of total storage per account and up to 5 devices. Storage includes encrypted history, thumbnails and files. Transfers are subject to rate limits. If your account is full, remove old pushes to make room; fwd does not silently delete older history to accept new pushes.
fwd is free during the beta. Accounts that participate in the private beta will keep a free plan when the beta ends, with 25 MB per file, 1 GB of account storage and 5 devices. That plan includes the core links, text, files, encryption and history features within its limits, for as long as fwd operates. Future paid plans and their prices have not been announced.
The plan is for accounts that participate in the private beta. Joining the waitlist alone does not qualify. The higher file and storage limits take effect when the beta ends, rather than during the beta. See the terms for the commitment.
Send links, text and files between your own devices. In the extension, send the current page, a link or selected text from the context menu, or choose a file. On Android, share content through the share sheet, choose a file or manually send text from your clipboard.
A new device joins with approval from a device already on your account. Pair your phone by scanning the code shown by the extension, or use the manual-code fallback. Approve only devices you control. If you have lost every device, you need your recovery key as well as access to your account email to restore your account.
Once a push is marked Sent, the service has stored it. Your other devices can sync it when they reconnect, unless it has been deleted. A push still waiting to send has not reached that point. Background delivery depends on the operating system and network connection.
The first release sends content between your own devices. Sharing with other accounts is outside the MVP.
You can manually send clipboard text. The first release does not automatically sync your clipboard, mirror phone notifications or send SMS messages.
Sent and received pushes appear in searchable history on your devices. Stored pushes and their files have no automatic expiry timer; they remain until you delete them or your account, within your storage limit. Deleting a push removes it from synced history on your other devices when they reconnect. Copies you have downloaded or saved elsewhere remain on those devices.
Remove a lost device using another device on your account to prevent it receiving future pushes. This cannot erase content already saved on that device. If you lose every device, your recovery key and access to your account email are needed to recover encrypted history. If you lose both every device and the recovery key, fwd cannot recover that history; an emailed sign-in code alone cannot decrypt it.
You can request account deletion from an app or the account deletion page. A website request verified by email disables the account immediately and has a 72-hour hold, during which an existing device can cancel it. After the hold, account data is erased within 24 hours. Deletion confirmed from an existing device starts cleanup immediately. Copies you saved elsewhere are not removed. See the privacy policy for backup retention.
Email hello@usefwd.io, or join the conversation on r/usefwd. Never share your recovery key or sign-in codes.
